Aaron and Miles were already in the bar playing backgammon and trying to get Tyler to eat fried conch. Blair’s mother and Cyrus were still out sailing on some owner’s yacht, so no one had seen them yet.

The resort dining room wasn’t really a room at all, just a large covered deck facing the beach and the perfectly blue-green sea. To one side of the deck was a bar fashioned from bamboo and glass, with white leather barstools. Very modern tropical chic.

“Two rum and Cokes please,” Blair told the bartender in French. The great thing about being on a French island was that you didn’t have to worry about getting carded.

Not that she got carded very often.

Serena took her drink and clinked glasses with Blair. “To us,” she toasted. And then they both tilted back their heads and chugged.

“Whoa,” Miles breathed, watching Blair admiringly. He had changed into black Armani cargo pants and a cement gray Armani polo shirt and looked too pale now that he was out of the city. “How can you do that without burping like a truck driver afterward?”

Blair grinned and wiped her lips with the back of her hand. “Practice.”

Aaron shook his head. His dreadlocks looked more appropriate now, with the beach in the background. He shoved his hands in the pockets of his army green cargo shorts. “I’m not sure that’s something to be proud of.”

Blair rolled her eyes. “As if you never drink.”

Aaron shrugged. “I drink. I just prefer to drink water when I’m thirsty.”

Tyler took a bite of conch and then spat it into a cocktail napkin. “And Blair drinks rubbing alcohol,” he quipped.

Blair was about to smack him, but then she caught sight of her mother and Cyrus walking down the dock toward them. Cyrus was holding onto Eleanor’s elbow as if he were concerned she might trip. If it had been anyone else, Blair might have thought that was sweet, but in her opinion nothing Cyrus did was ever sweet. Her mother was wearing a bright green-and-pink Lilly Pulitzer dress with white frogs all over it that would have looked a lot better if it was all one color and covered her not-so-thin legs a little more. Her highlighted blond bob was tucked into a white linen headband, and her face was deeply tanned. Cyrus was wearing red linen pleated pants and a navy-blue-and-white-striped polo shirt. His face was red and shiny, and he couldn’t have looked more porcine.

Meaning “piglike,” for those who got low scores on their SAT verbal.

Eleanor Waldorf Rose squealed when she saw them all standing at the bar. “Hello, kidlets!” she cried, rushing over and squeezing Tyler tight. She let go of him and threw herself at Blair. “I’ve missed you so much. And I’ve got so much to tell you!”

Serena smiled politely. “Hello, Mrs. Rose.” Blair’s mother was kind of a ditz, but she was a lot less stuck-up than her own mother.

Cyrus shook Aaron’s hand. “Glad to see you, son. My lawyer hasn’t called me, so I guess you and Blair managed not to burn the building down while we were gone.
